Michael A Ketteringham, MD MPH
Mental health and its treatment are stigmatized, which makes the initiation of psychiatric treatment intimidating for many. This is especially true when people seek care for sexual or substance use disorders. I pay particular attention to this barrier to care by providing a professional, nonjudgmental, and confidential space for consultation and treatment. Telepsychiatry is also available when appropriate to increase access to care.
I went to medical school at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons where I also obtained a Masters of Public Health. Following, I trained as a resident in general medicine at Columbia University, as a resident in psychiatry at New York University, and as a fellow in addiction psychiatry at New York University. In my professional career, I have obtained additional training in the evaluation and treatment of sexual disorders through NYU's Program in Human Sexuality.
In addition to private practice, I am the Medical Director of the Consultation Psychiatry Service at Northwell Health. Consultation psychiatry exists at the interface of psychiatry and the disciplines of internal medicine, neurology, and surgery. This experience aids me in the diagnosis and treatment of clients by fostering a multidisciplinary approach to health and illness. Clinically, I supervise a team consisting of other attending psychiatrists and nurse practitioners. I am also involved in ongoing research and the education and training of medical students, physician assistant students, and psychiatry residents at Staten Island University Hospital, Bellevue Hospital, and New York University.
I am competent in treating psychiatric disorders, but I also commonly see patients who do not meet criteria for a mental illness, but who benefit from sessions with a trained psychotherapist. I have experience treating individuals, couples, and families. Treatment consists of therapy and medication when indicated.
